The Change

By: Mica

Hi, I'm Mica. I guess I was pretty much an average kid until I dicovered a secret that changed my life. I'm still not sure if it changed for better.....or worse. But it was a difference. It all started with an everyday trip to the mall with my very best friends, Donna, Jaime and Shari-Ann. We were shopping for clothes (what else?) when Donna spoke up. "I'm really hungry, let's grab a bite to eat." So we all followed her to the nearest Burger King and sat down while she went to get our orders. We were totally pooped, probably because our arms were jammed with shopping bags. I went up to the service counter and listened to Donna give the woman behind the counter our orders.

Donna, Shari and I had are usual. Plain cheeseburger, French fries and large cokes. Jaime had her usual unusual. A cheeseburger with everything plus exta sauce. Suddenly the woman beside the counter came out took us by the arms and headed with us to the outside of the store. Jaime and Shari were still inside and had not noticed us leaving. "Where are we going,? I asked. "To your assigned places of course," she said in a what-is-wrong-don't-you-know-anything-voice.

So we figured they had ran out of cheeseburgers or something and dumbly followed her. She led us to a small staircase and into an elevator. I took a look at the buttons and gave the woman this look that just screamed DUH! She sighed shook her head and pressed a strange code on the numbers. Something like 223453. She quickly stepped out just as the elevator door shut and we were left alone heading to who knew where.

The door opened to reveal the weirdest scene in my entire life. Have you ever watched Star Trek with all the weird space aliens and life forms? Than this would definately look familiar to you. There were all these weird "things" walking around not to mention....crawling? yeck.

All of a sudden this really muscle bound reject from a knife commercial came up to us and spoke. "grivbetmat etral deats mat." One look at him and Donna fainted. I just screamed at the top of my lungs and backed up right into the biggest, not to mention grossest worm I had ever seen. It was literally a giant worm. It had hundreds of minature feet that held the mass up and the eyes....so creepy. They were like these two melted jello cubes on the top of the things back or head or whatever. It had a huge mouth (which was now open) with thousands of sharp little teeth inside. The next sounds I uttered were very brief. "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH."

Just as suddenly as that scream came out of my mouth all heads turned toward me. I looked around the room noticing that there were humans as well as aliens in there. I slowly began to back up toward the elevator when someone grabbed me from behind lifted me off the ground and turned me around. I found myself gawking at something that looked like a cross between a horse, a deer and if you took a look at the tail, a scorpian. It looked like someone had combined all these animals and painted the thing blue. It had no mouth and four eyes. A pair on their faces like we do and another pair sticking up on something that looked like antlers. If I had been freaked out before I think the word to use now would be terrified. Some weird alien freak was holding me above the floor by my shoulders. Ooookay! The guys in white coats should come in any minute know, I thought to myself.

<Don't move> I looked around. It slowly dawned to me that the voice had come from inside my mind. I looked down at the weird blue horse and I heard somthing again. <Yes, it was me human. You should not have come here>

"Gee, in that case I'll just leave now," I said in a nervous voice and struggled.

<Don't bother, I am Visser Three>

"Nice to meet you," I strained out.

Out of the corner of my eye I saw Donna slowly get up while rubbing her head in pain. It seems that Visser Three noticed this too because he turned his head and looked at the giant worm-things. <Get her>

In an instant we were both in a large cage packed with other people. I went up to a man. "What is going on here?'' I asked while attempting to make my voice sound straight.

"Don't you know," he asked. I shook my head and he pointed to what looked like a big brown lake with hundreds of small slugs swiming around inside.

"It's called a Yeerk Pool," he said.

"What are the things swimming inside it," I asked.

"Yeerks." The way he said the name Yeerk filled me with dread. Suddenly I heard screaming as I saw a woman being dragged out of one of the cages toward the Pool. She was held down by two of the knife-guys about a centimeter or two above the murky water.

"The things that are holding her are called Hork-Bajjir," said the old man. "Don't let their appearances fool you, they were a peaceful race until the Yeerks enslaved them."

"Enslaved," I looked at him in worry.

"Watch," he said pointing at the woman. A minute later I noticed a Yeerk swim up to her and position itself below her ear. Then in a mixtured look of disgust and amazement I watched the thing crawl into her ear and into her head.

A second later she stopped screaming and was completely calm. The Hork-Bajjir let her go and she walked into the elevator and was gone. "Why did they let her go," I asked.

"It's not her anymore," the man said shaking his head. "It's the Yeerk."

I crawled over to Donna. She was hunched in a small corner of the cage. "Well, what's going on here," She asked me.

I looked toward the pool and spoke "believe me, you don't want to know."

All of a sudden a pair of humans came over to us and grabbed us by the arms. We tried to pull away but it was no use. Suddenly I thought of something.

"Donna, Your matches," I whispered. She seemed to understand. I didn't know wether this pool was flammable or not, but it was worth a try.

I grimaced as my head was lowered toward the Yeerk Pool. After a while I noticed a Yeerk swim up to my head.

"Now! Donna do it," I screamed. She took the matches out of her pocket and before the Hork-Bajjir could stop her, she lit one and threw it into the pool. And it lit up in fire like it was made of gasoline.

The place turned into a panic stadium. Controllers were running around everywhere so no one noticed us sneak toward the cages. We opened them up and let the humans and other slave aliens loose. I was about the open a cage full of Hork-Bajjir when Visser Three came up behind me.

<You meddling little fool> he screamed into my head. <You will pay for this> With that he picked me up and hurled me straight into the pool.

I reached the surface to find not only fire in all directions but Yeerks floating around dead on the surface. I realized that the only way I could get out of here without getting first degree burns would be to swim under water. So I gathered my courage and dived in. I swam and dodged dead Yeerks. I couldn't surface. I opened my mouth underwater and some of the stuff went down my throat.

I suddenly felt a horrible pain in the pit of my stomach and surfaced even though I would get burnt, I had to try. A look of pure shock came over me when I realized I wasn't feeling any burns. In fact it almost looked like the flames were dodging away from me. I got out of the pool and looked myself over. I immediately noticed that my hands had an odd red glow around them. I turned around to see Visser Three galloping toward me at way over 100km/h.

I shot up my arms in order to protect myself and the minute I did that a weird beam came out of my hands and knocked Visser Three clear across the room. It was odd. I could not see the force that knocked him down....but I could control it. I sent another beam which slammed him against a wall.

<:Retreat, everybody out know> he yelled in thought-speak. I went over to Donna and we got out of their as fast as we could. I slammed aliens that tried to eat us on the way.

We got back into the Burger King and found Jaime and Shari sitting in the seats waiting for us. "What the....," Shari stuttered.

"What happened to you," Jaime said in amazement.

We did look like we had been through a tough time. Donna was scraped up and bleeding and I was wet and glowing.

We dragged Shari and Jaime out and told them what had happened. We managed to get them to believe us when I showed them what had given me the power to slam people against walls. We decided then and their that we were alone on this. Since anyone could be a controller and I was now on Visser Three's death wish.

With our knowlidge of Yeerks, my powers and what we knew we decided to try to do as much damage to the Yeerks as we could handle. Starting with Visser Three.
